Baptism
Key Elements of Baptism
Catholic Baptism is a Sacrament of Initiation, a spiritual rebirth that washes away original sin, incorporates the person into the Church (the Body of Christ), and begins a new life in Christ. This is achieved through the use of water and the Trinitarian words: "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
Water: The essential element, typically administered through pouring or immersion.
Anointing with Blessed Oils: Includes the Oil of Catechumens and Sacred Chrism.
Sign of the Cross: A symbolic gesture made on the person.
White Garment: Given to the baptized, symbolizing purity and new life in Christ.
Lighted Candle: Represents Christ as the light, and the newly baptized as a child of light.
Preparation for Baptism
Infant Baptism: Infant baptism is a sacramental, joyful event where infants are cleansed of original sin, reborn into grace, and initiated into the Catholic Church. Parents are required to register with St. Mary's Office, attend a preparation workshop, and select qualified godparents. Baptism is encouraged shortly after birth.
Removal of Original Sin: Baptism removes original sin and initiates the child into a covenant relationship with God.
Grace and Adoption: The infant is filled with the Holy Spirit and becomes an adopted child of God.
Incorporation: The child becomes a member of the Church and the Body of Christ.
Baptismal Class and Registration
Children 7 years and older: Any unbaptized child 7 years of age (the age of reason) and older must be enrolled in the two-year sacramental preparation program through our parish religious education program.
