Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Penance, also known as Confession or Reconciliation, is a profound opportunity to return to God, acknowledge our sins with genuine sorrow, and receive His forgiveness. The Gospels highlight their importance for our growth in holiness. The Rite of Reconciliation can be celebrated face-to-face or anonymously, with a screen separating the penitent and the priest.

Steps to Celebrating the Sacrament
1. Before Confession: Repentance
A clear and decisive rejection of sins committed, along with a firm resolution not to commit them again, is the essential act of Penance. Out of love for God, a resolution to try and avoid occasions of sin suffices for true repentance.
2. Examination of Conscience
Before entering the confessional, it is recommended to review mortal and venial sins committed since your last sacramental confession. Mortal sins are grave offenses that sever our friendship with God and, consequently, cause a loss of sanctifying grace. Anyone dying in a state of mortal sin would suffer eternal separation from God in Hell. Venial sins are lesser offenses that injure, but do not destroy one's relationship with God.
A helpful way to examine your conscience is to reflect on the Ten Commandments and the Precepts of the Church.
3. During Confession
This is a personal time with the priest to admit your sins as concisely and exactly as possible, asking for the forgiveness of God and the Church. Listen to the words of the priest and the penance he will give you. This penance, which may be prayers, a small sacrifice, or a work of charity, is assigned to remind you that through constant penance, we overcome our sins and share in what Christ merited for us.
4. At the End of Confession
Listen to the words of absolution, which signify the sacramental forgiveness of the Church through the ordained priest. Afterward, give thanks to God for His constant love and mercy towards His beloved children.
